Bangabandhu murder case Verdict resembles Justice: Awami League
November 19,2009 - Awami League General Secretary Syed Ashraful Islam on Tuesday expressed his party’s reaction on the final verdict in the Bangabandhu assassination case saying it has been proved that no one is above the law, no matter how influential he or she is. The AL welcomed the verdict on the August 15, 1975 killings that had remained as a stigma for the nation during the last 34 years; Ashraf told reporters at the party's Dhanmondi office after the Supreme Court upheld the High Court's verdict awarding capital punishment to the killers of the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and most of his family members. The verdict couldn’t bring joy to the AL men, as it would not be able to bring back Bangabandhu and his assassinated family members, he added. Ashraf, also the LGRD minister, said the AL was not a vindictive party and never will be. It only wants to establish the rule of law and human rights. The minister said today's historic verdict on Bangabandhu and most of his family members killing has established the rule of law above injustice and misrule. The present government would facilitate fair trials for all other killings in the country, he added.
Answering a query on Prime Minister and AL President Sheikh Hasina’s reaction on the judgement, the LGRD minister said she got what she wanted. She sought nothing but the justice, he said adding that she expressed her satisfaction after the verdict, but she was also lamenting remembering her assassinated family members.
Brushing aside all speculations, Awami League general secretary Syed Ashraful Islam on Thursday said the trial of the war criminals was a must in the soil of Bangladesh and it would start soon. "The people have given us their clear mandate to try the war criminals who killed millions of people during the War of Liberation," he said at a overcrowded press conference aired live on televisions and radio channels from the party's Dhandmondi office.
Ashraful Islam, also the LGRD and Cooperatives Minister, said a resolution to try the war criminals has unanimously been adopted in the Jatiya Sangsad, while the government has allocated Taka 10 crore to meet necessary expenses for the trial.
The Religious Affairs Ministry today urged all mosques across the country to hold special prayers during the Juma prayers tomorrow to express gratitude to almighty Allah as the apex court upheld the capital punishment of the killers of Bangabandhu and most of his family members. The ministry made the request in a statement as the Baitul Mokarram National mosque organized a special prayer after Asr prayers today. The statement also requested to organize special prayers at all places of worships of followers of other religious faiths including temples, churches and pagodas tomorrow.
